Thursday Beloved Spiritual Exercises

In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
✠ Amen

1.  Prayer of the Beloved Disciple

✠ Heavenly Father, in the Name of Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit, may we enter the solemn grace of the upper room, that place of Eucharistic love, where the Holy Spirit rested upon the Apostles in tongues of fire. May we abide in you and you in us, in one accord… with our minds, hearts, bodies, and souls at rest, in your Peace… so that we may have ears to hear, eyes to see, hearts to understand.

2.  Our Father

Every day, we begin with the Lord’s prayer.

“Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen”

Thursday, we focus on the fourth petition of the Lord’s prayer.

Give Us this Day our Daily Bread

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11

“Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back”. Luke 6:38

✠ Lord Jesus, we thank you for providing for us and trust you for the same. Give us the grace to hunger and thirst for your presence in the Eucharist. Help us to hunger and thirst for righteousness, so that we may be satisfied as we love one another in truth and in deed. Give us the grace to share and provide for those in need. In this way, we can be sure of your providing love.

3.  Hail Mary

Every day, we pray the Hail Mary to prepare our hearts for consecration, through Mary to the Most Holy Trinity.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

Thursday, we focus on the fourth part of the Hail Mary

Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.”

✠ While her yes to God at the Annunciation paved the way for the Incarnation, her greatest blessing is due to her continued obedience to God, hour by hour and day by day. Help us consecrate our lives through Mary to the Trinity so that we may grow in obedience and enjoy the blessings of God.

4.  I AM Sayings

Thursday, we focus on the fourth I AM declaration.

“I am the Good Shepherd” John 10:10

Praise be the Father – Protector.
Praise be Jesus – Good Shepherd.
Praise be the Holy Spirit – Rock of Refuge
Praise be the Trinity for the gift of Protecting Love.

✠ We worship you as we abide in your protective love.

5.  Love Incarnate

God’s Love and Obedience

“As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love… This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:9-10,12

✠ Lord Jesus, help us to understand the value of keeping your commandments as you kept your Father’s commandments. Only in loving obedience can we rest in you.

6.  Shepherd’s Love

Each day we take one of the places in Psalm 23, where the Good Shepherd shows his love for us.

Thursdays, we focus on encounters with God in times of trial.

Valley of Darkness

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

✠ Father, when we face the darkest times of desolation and trial, you are with us with rod and staff. With your rod, you chasten us with tough love to get us on the right path. With your staff, you protect us against the wolves of the world, the flesh, and the devil.

7.  Gifts of the Holy Spirit

There are seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Thursday, we focus on the gift of Fortitude.

Fortitude

“When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem.” Luke 9:51

✠ Lord Jesus, help us set to accept the yoke of our cross, with patient endurance, not looking back, so that we may be made worthy to be numbered among your chosen.

8.  Signs

There are seven signs that show Jesus is the Son of God.

Thursdays, we focus on the fourth sign.

Multiplying the Loaves and Fishes (John 6:5-14)

✠ Jesus, we praise you for multiplying the loaves and fishes to satisfy the hunger of the multitude. Help us to hunger and thirst for righteousness and trust in your providing love.

9.  Holy Hour

The Hour of Obedience

“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.” John 12:27

✠ Lord Jesus, help us to enter into the sacrifice of your holy hour so that every hour of our day may be made holy, and we can be faithful in the midst of temptation.

10.  Awake

Wake up to be faithful in times of trial

“Then he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me… Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:38,41

✠ Lord Jesus, help us to begin to carve out time in our day so that we are keeping the night watches and the day watches. Seven times a day is not enough, we need to be in constant prayer to be ready for the day of your coming.

11.  Penitential Prayer

The penitential prayer is founded on Divine Mercy. We cannot hope to open the gate of mercy if we do not repent from sin, love our enemy, and forgive all who have offended us.

✠  Heavenly Father, shine forth your grace upon us, to melt our hard hearts so we can:

  • Love our enemies and forgive all who have harmed us.
  • repent in earnest for the sins which are blocking us from loving you with our mind, soul, and strength, and love our neighbor as ourselves.

We pray to understand the effect of sins in our life, in our families, our nation, and the world. Give us the gift of truth, a repentant heart, a firm purpose of amendment, and the desire to make reparation.

By your grace, we choose to love our enemies and to forgive all who have harmed us.

Thursdays, we focus on overcoming envy and its related sins.

We repent for the sins of the stronghold of envy.

envy ✠ Lord Have Mercy
possessiveness ✠ Lord Have Mercy
avarice ✠ Lord Have Mercy
elitism ✠ Lord Have Mercy
divisiveness ✠ Lord Have Mercy
ungratefulness ✠ Lord Have Mercy
bribery and corruption ✠ Lord Have Mercy

✠ Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.

All Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Cleanse us from our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy God, visit and heal our infirmities for thy Name’s sake.

12.  Sword of the Spirit

The Word of God convicts us of sin so we can repent.

Overcoming Envy by Kindness

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”  Proverbs 14:30

✠ Love is kind

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”  1 Corinthians 13

✠ Love is kind

“Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.  Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.”  1 Peter 2:1-2

✠ Love is kind

13.  Intercessions

God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We love you; we praise you; we thank you for your Indwelling love as we abide in you and you in us, so we may intercede in your Name and according to your will.

For souls caught in the grip of envy

That each one would repent, embrace the yoke of kindness becoming victors. We pray to the Lord.

✠ Lord, hear our prayer.

Wake up Call to the Suffering

For the sick, the imprisoned, the homeless, refugees, and those called to serve them, that may have lost their way, that each can wake up, receive the gift of faith and renounce vice and acquire virtue, bringing healing and blessing and restoring honor, by the power of Jesus’ name. We pray to the Lord.

We thank you Father for answering our prayers in Jesus’ Name by the power of the Holy Spirit.

14.  Discernment

Discernment helps us make choices that draw us closer to God.

Discernment and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

“And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless.” Philippians 1:9-10

✠ Lord Jesus, help me to receive your gift of love, to awaken my faculties of hearing, seeing, discerning, and choosing so that I will be prepared for the hour of your coming.

15.  Armor of Christ

Each day we pray for the armor of Christ so as to prepare for deliverance prayers.

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians: 6:10

Lord Jesus,

By the Belt of Truth: ✠ Replace our lies with your Truth.
By the Breastplate of Righteousness: ✠ Replace our hard hearts with a new heart.
By the Shoes of Peace: ✠ Replace our fear and anxiety with the gift of trust in your divine providence.
By the Shield of Faith: ✠ Replace our doubts and insecurities with the gift of expectant faith.
By the Helmet of Salvation: ✠ Replace our selfish thoughts with your truth and wisdom.
By the Sword of the Spirit: ✠ Replace vain words with your divine Word.
By the Mantle of Our Lady: ✠ Enjoin us to renew the face of the earth.

✠ Amen.

16.  Deliverance

Every day we pray the following prayers to prepare us for deliverance.

“Behold, I give you power to trample underfoot snakes and scorpions, and all the power of enemies”. Luke 10:19

✠ Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

Lord Jesus, you drove away legions of demons by which the people of God were healed. These you commanded to depart and not to return again. You have defeated all the armies of our invisible enemies and freed your faithful.

Thursdays we pray to be delivered from the evil spirits associated with envy.

In the Name of Jesus, by the Blood of Jesus, by the Power of his Word, we take authority over the strongholds of envy.

Lord Jesus, remove the stronghold of envy and fill us with the gifts of kindness.

Where there has been envy, ✠ let there be kindness.
Where there has been possessiveness, ✠ let there be generosity.
Where there has been avarice, ✠  let there be contentment.
Where there has been elitism, ✠  let there be humble hearts.
Where there has been division, ✠  let there be unity.
Where there has been bribery, ✠  let trust be restored.
Where there has been corruption, ✠  let there be integrity.

17.  Cleansing

“So, he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.” Kings 5:14

In the spirit of Elisha, we pray for a different way of cleansing each day.

Breath of Mercy

“When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. ”John 20:19-22

✠ Lord Jesus, by your breath of mercy, cleansing me from evil, welcoming me into your divine light, love, and life.

We pause to breathe in the breath of the Holy Spirit.

18.  Narrow Gate

Scripture is clear that few find the narrow gate to salvation. These Beloved Spiritual exercises help us to navigate to this gate and we pray for the courage to enter. We cannot presume upon salvation, rather we need to do our part to live the faith which God has given us, every day.

Only those who receive Eucharist and Abide in Jesus will be Saved

“So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.” John 6:53-56

✠ Jesus, help me to realize that while many rejected your gift of the Eucharist and went away sad, help me to accept the gift of your Body and Blood, so that I may persevere on your narrow path to salvation.

19.  Yoke of Christ

Every day we pray these prayers to be yoked to Christ.

✠ My Soul will not rest until I rest in you.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon your shoulder for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Learn from me; for I am gentle and humble of heart, and your soul will find rest.” Matthew 11:28-30

✠ My Soul will not rest until I rest in you.

On Thursday, we focus on the yoke of kindness.

Lord, grant me the courage to embrace the yoke of kindness, so I can learn to deny myself, take up my cross daily, and follow you, so as to enter into your rest.

✠ I accept the yoke of kindness.

We pause to shoulder the yoke of Christ and the gift of kindness.

20.  Abiding in Jesus

Keeping God’s Word

“Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” John 14:23

I abide in Jesus who abides in the Father, who abides in me.

Loving One Another

“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No man has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.” 1 John 4:11-12

I abide in Jesus who abides in the Father, who abides in me.

Triumph of the Lamb

“Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all therein, saying, “To him who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might for ever and ever!” And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.” Revelation 5:11-14

I abide in Jesus who abides in the Father, who abides in me.

21.  Identity in Jesus

Jesus’ interaction with the Woman at the well is all about building our identity in Christ.

Prophet

“‘Sir, I see that you are a prophet’.”  John 4:19

✠ Jesus, help me to recognize that you know everything about my past and my people, and still you love me.  Help me to turn to you to satisfy the deepest longings of my heart.

22.  Love In Deed

There are seven corporal works of mercy as recorded in Matthew 25. Those who do not love in deed risk the fires of hell.

Shelter the Homeless

“I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Matthew 25:35

✠ Lord give me a heart for the poor so that I may begin to see your face in the homeless. Help me to do my part to help provide lodging.

23.  Beatitudes of Revelation

There are seven beatitudes in the Book of Revelation.

Blessed are those Enter the Marriage Feast of the Lamb

“And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.” Revelations 19:9

✠ Lord Jesus, we thank you for the invitation to celebrate the Eucharist, which prefigures the marriage feast of the Lamb, where you surely come to us every day until you come in glory.

24.  Sanctification

Sanctification by Faith Opens us to Forgiveness of Sins

“I will rescue you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’” Acts 26:17-18

✠ Lord Jesus, sanctify us by faith, so that we may become salt of the earth and light of the world.

Closing

Most Holy Trinity, we praise you for showering blessings upon us, replacing our vice of envy with the virtue of kindness,  giving us new hearts, perfect abodes of your indwelling love, so that abiding in love and unity we may be transformed from glory to glory, by the Lord who is the Spirit empowering us to renew the face of the earth. ✠ Amen

“I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do.” John 17:4

✠ Lord Jesus, you taught us that glory is finishing the work your Father gave you, doing his will by the power of the Holy Spirit. Help me to understand the purpose for which I was created, so I may do your will, by the power of the Holy Spirit, obedient to the end, to your honor and glory.

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  ✠ Amen
